Connecting Technical Documentation, Planning and Execution: the SKYDOCS/eJOBCARD Digital MRO Environment

The Challenge

Aircraft maintenance depends on controlled technical information, accurate applicability and disciplined execution. Moving from paper-heavy or fragmented processes to electronic job cards is therefore not simply a matter of digitising a form. The technical source content, aircraft effectivity, maintenance planning, work allocation, authorised execution and final record all have to remain connected.

The DataTech approach

DataTech approached the programme as an integrated digital MRO environment rather than as an isolated application. The solution combines SKYDOCS technical-content processing with the eJOBCARD execution workflow and the wider maintenance-planning context. DataTech’s work draws on in-house software engineering, enterprise integration, SAP and aviation technology expertise.

  1. Technical-document intelligence
SKYDOCS acts as the technical-document intelligence layer. It handles structured maintenance content such as OWD/MI-OWD and SGML/XML-based material, along with revisions, graphics, warnings, cautions, notes, tools, materials and job-setup information. The backend parses and transforms this content into structures suitable for operational job cards rather than presenting raw technical files to the user.
  2. Aircraft-specific applicability
Effectivity is a critical control. A technical instruction may exist in the source documentation but not apply to every aircraft. The processing therefore uses aircraft/MSN effectivity to determine which subtasks remain valid for the selected aircraft before they are presented for execution. Revision information is also retained so that the job-card content remains traceable to the applicable technical source.
  3. Planning and Bill of Work
The business project material describes SKYDOCS job-card structures integrating with the SAP S/4HANA CS/PM environment. The Bill of Work provides the business context linking planned work and the required job cards. Once work is released, the required job cards can move into the execution environment. Exact SAP interface wording and responsibilities should be confirmed for external publication.
  4. eJOBCARD execution
eJOBCARD provides the operational layer. Work can be prepared and published, organised by workstation/trade, assigned to employees, and accessed through clock-on/clock-off processes. In the central work area, maintenance personnel can read procedures, complete structured tables and fields, manage attachments and comments, and apply authorised digital signatures and stamps where required.
  5. Control, reporting and completion
The workflow includes ownership, clocking, audit, revision and stamp-related reporting. Job-card locking helps control active editing sessions. Once work is completed, final completion and release processes can be carried out and the record can proceed into controlled document-management and archiving processes.

The business value

The integrated model reduces the amount of manual interpretation between technical documentation and operational work, improves control over aircraft-specific content, preserves safety information within the workflow, supports traceability from source document to execution, and creates a stronger digital link between planning and frontline maintenance. Any quantified savings, productivity or efficiency claims should be published only after business validation and customer approval.

What this proves about DataTech

The project demonstrates a combination of capabilities: specialist software development, technical-document processing, SAP and enterprise integration, workflow design, digital authorisation, reporting and aviation-domain understanding. That combination is relevant wherever complex organisations need to connect controlled information, enterprise systems and operational execution.

The next steps

For organisations reviewing electronic job cards, digital MRO, systems integration or specialist operational software, DataTech can use this experience to help define the architecture, workflows and integration approach required for a connected digital environment.
